Level 0: Actuators & sensors

Physical processes

Level 0: Actuators & sensors

This level includes actual physical processes and devices, such as sensors, actuators, pumps, valves and machines.

Example: A temperature sensor measures the temperature in an oven

Level 1: PLC

Smart devices

Level 1: PLC

The activities for recording and manipulating the physical processes are defined here. This includes devices such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that communicate directly with the sensors and actuators.

Example: A PLC receives the signal from the temperature sensor and controls the heating of the oven accordingly

Level 2: HMI / SCADA

Monitoring and control

Level 2: HMI / SCADA

This level deals with the monitoring and control of physical processes. SCADA systems (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and HMI (Human Machine Interface) are used here.

Example: A SCADA system monitors the oven's temperature data in real time and displays it on an HMI where an operator can intervene if necessary

Level 4: MES

Manufacturing execution systems

Level 4: MES

The workflow activities for manufacturing the desired end products are defined at this level. Manufacturing execution systems (MES) coordinate and monitor the production processes in real time.

Example: An MES plans and tracks the production of batches, ensures that all materials are available and documents the production process

Level 4: ERP

Business-related activities

Level 4: ERP

This level comprises the business-related activities required to manage a manufacturing operation. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems support the planning and control of company resources.

Example: An ERP system manages orders, inventories, personnel and finances and ensures that production meets business requirements

Example: A sensor (Level 0) sends data to a PLC (Level 1), which then passes it on to a SCADA system (Level 2). The SCADA informs the MES (Level 3), which in turn notifies the ERP system (Level 4) about the production status.
